Automatic PCB Plating Line
The automatic PCB plating line is designed for continuous and precise surface treatment of printed circuit boards. Multiple gantry transporters can be configured according to the required process flow, production capacity, and line layout. The complete transfer system is automatically controlled by a PLC to ensure stable and accurate movement between process stations.
1. Multiple Automatic Gantry Transporters
To meet different requirements for process flow and production output, the plating line can be equipped with multiple gantry transporters. Each transporter is capable of vertical lifting, horizontal movement, and high-speed traveling.
All transporter movements are automatically controlled by the PLC system. The number of transporters can be configured according to the production capacity and process sequence of the PCB plating line.
2. Fully Automatic Plating Process
This is a fully automatic gantry-type PCB plating line. Except for manual loading and unloading, the material transfer and plating operations are automatically completed by the gantry transporters according to the preset process program.
The transporters automatically transfer the PCB workpieces between the corresponding process tanks, reducing manual handling and improving process consistency.
3. Smooth and Precise Transporter Movement
When a transporter is in motion, the warning lamp is activated to indicate its operating status.
Both vertical lifting and horizontal traveling use a three-stage speed profile: low speed → high speed → low speed. The transporter starts and stops smoothly, helping minimize inertia-induced swinging and maintain stable movement.
This speed-control system also helps achieve accurate positioning and repeatable transfer performance during continuous PCB plating operations.
4. PLC-Controlled Easy Operation
The system is designed for simple and convenient operation. Operators only need to select the required plating program that has been preset in the PLC control system.
After the program is selected, the gantry transporter automatically executes the programmed sequence, including lifting, horizontal transfer, positioning, lowering, and movement between the different process stations.
This reduces the need for manual intervention and helps maintain consistent process execution.
5. Precise Positioning and Safety Protection
Absolute Positioning System
The gantry transporter adopts an absolute positioning system to provide accurate and repeatable positioning. Each process tank is assigned a unique identification code, helping the control system identify the correct position and reduce the risk of transporter misplacement.
Collision Protection
Safety guardrails are installed around the transporter operating area to help prevent accidental contact between the moving equipment and personnel.
Track Protection
Protective blocks and control devices are installed along the rails to help prevent the transporter from leaving the designated track.
Emergency Safety System
Safety ropes connected to the emergency braking system are installed along both sides of the plating line. These safety devices provide additional protection and help reduce operational risks during daily operation.
Basic Operating Procedure
The operator first loads the PCB workpieces onto the designated fixture or carrier and secures them in position. After loading is completed, the operator selects the corresponding plating program through the control interface.
The gantry transporter then automatically moves to the loading station according to the preset program. It lifts the loaded carrier and transfers it to the first process tank. The carrier is then lowered into the tank for the required treatment.
After the specified process time, the transporter lifts the carrier and automatically transfers it to the next process station. The same sequence is repeated throughout the complete PCB plating process according to the selected process recipe.
After the final plating and treatment stages are completed, the transporter transfers the processed PCB workpieces to the unloading station. Once the unloading station is confirmed to be ready by the sensor, the transporter lowers the carrier into the designated position.
The operator can then remove the processed PCB workpieces, completing the automatic plating cycle.
Automatic Process Management
The PLC control system coordinates transporter movement and the preset plating sequence. By using programmed process recipes, the system can control the transfer sequence, lifting and lowering movements, positioning, and timing of each process stage.
This automated configuration helps improve positioning accuracy, process consistency, production efficiency, and operational safety for PCB plating applications.
Typical PCB Plating Process
The exact process sequence is configured according to the PCB type, plating method, required metal thickness and production target.
A typical configuration may include:
-
PCB Loading – PCB panels are securely positioned on the designated fixture or transfer system.
-
Cleaning and Degreasing – Surface contaminants are removed before plating.
-
Micro-Etching / Activation – The copper surface is prepared for subsequent plating.
-
Rinsing – Multiple rinsing stages help reduce chemical carryover between process tanks.
-
Copper Plating – Copper is deposited under controlled electrical and chemical conditions.
-
Additional Plating – Tin or other plating stages can be incorporated when required by the approved process.
-
Post-Treatment – The plated panels undergo the specified rinsing and post-treatment steps.
-
Drying – The finished PCB panels are dried before inspection and unloading.
The final tank sequence, processing time, rectifier configuration, agitation, filtration and chemical control system are determined during project engineering.
