Reel to Reel Plating Line Electroplating Equipment

Automatic Reel-to-Reel Plating Line

The automatic reel-to-reel plating line is designed for continuous electroplating of reel-fed metal strips and precision metal components. The system integrates strip unwinding, surface pretreatment, electroplating, rinsing, drying and rewinding into a continuous production process.

Compared with batch plating systems, the reel-to-reel configuration enables continuous material feeding and stable process operation, making it suitable for high-volume production where consistent coating quality and repeatable processing are required.

The line layout, plating stages, tank configuration, electrical control and auxiliary systems can be engineered according to the substrate material, coating requirements, strip dimensions and production capacity.

Continuous Roll-to-Roll Electroplating Process

Continuous electroplating, also referred to as roll-to-roll electroplating, is designed for strip-shaped materials that can be continuously fed and collected in coils. Typical materials include steel strips and other metal strips produced through continuous stamping or forming processes.

Unlike batch plating systems, a roll-to-roll plating line continuously moves the strip through a series of treatment and plating stages. This configuration supports stable production flow, consistent coating quality, and efficient processing of long-length metal strips.

A typical continuous electroplating line includes:

Pay-off / Material Unwinding → Pre-treatment → Electroplating → Post-treatment → Drying → Take-up / Material Rewinding

The process sequence can be customized according to the substrate material, coating type, strip dimensions, line speed, and required surface finish.

Plating Tank Configuration

Each electroplating station is generally designed with a main tank and an internal working tank. The plating solution is circulated from the main tank into the working tank by a dedicated pump.

Controlled openings are provided on both sides of the working tank. As the metal strip continuously passes through these openings, the plating solution flows around the strip and returns to the main tank. By balancing the pumping and return flow rates, the system maintains a stable working liquid level throughout continuous operation.

This circulation design helps provide consistent solution coverage and supports stable plating conditions during high-throughput roll-to-roll production.

Each process tank is fitted with a PVC process identification label, making it easier for operators to identify individual treatment and plating stages.

Tank Design & Manufacturing

5.1 Plating and Spare Tanks
The plating tanks and spare tanks are fabricated from 20 mm German Röchling PP material. The reinforcement structure also uses Röchling PP for enhanced chemical resistance and structural stability. Tank covers are manufactured from 8 mm transparent tempered glass, providing convenient visual monitoring of the plating process.

5.2 Main Process Tanks
The main process tanks are constructed from 12 mm German Röchling PP, with 20 mm Röchling PP reinforcement. For the main heating tanks, additional structural reinforcement is provided using 40 × 40 × 3.0 mm square steel tubing, which is covered with 4 mm PP to provide additional protection against the process environment.

The tank covers are made from 12 mm German Röchling PP. Pump openings are precision-machined to achieve accurate dimensions, smooth edges, and a clean finished appearance.

5.3 Welding and Fabrication Quality
All PP welding work is carried out with emphasis on joint strength, reliability, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish. Welded areas are required to be flat, smooth, clean, and free from obvious defects.

5.4 Drainage and Solution Discharge
Chemical outlets and drainage connections are arranged at the bottom of the tanks, facilitating solution replacement, routine cleaning, and waste discharge.

For double-compartment and triple-compartment rinse tanks, each individual compartment has its own bottom drainage outlet, allowing independent drainage and easier maintenance.

5.5 Multi-Stage Rinsing System
Multi-stage rinse tanks adopt a counter-flow water circulation arrangement to improve water utilization. Rinse water moves progressively from the cleaner stage toward the previous rinse stage, while controlled flow from the tank bottom helps maintain effective rinsing.

By extending the effective contact and circulation path of the rinse water, the system can improve rinsing efficiency while reducing unnecessary water consumption, making it suitable for continuous plating operations.
