The Automatic Reel-to-Reel Plating Line is designed for continuous surface finishing of metal strip and other coil-fed conductive materials. The production line integrates material unwinding, surface pretreatment, electroplating, rinsing, drying and rewinding into one continuous process.
Unlike batch plating systems, the reel-to-reel configuration keeps the material moving through each treatment stage with controlled process time and stable material tension. This helps reduce manual transfer between individual process tanks and supports consistent production for continuous strip materials.
The line can be engineered according to the material width, strip thickness, plating process, production requirements and available plant space. The system can integrate automatic material handling, process tanks, rectifiers, filtration, heating or cooling, rinsing, drying, exhaust treatment and PLC-based control.
As electronic products continue to become more compact and functionally integrated, electronic connectors are evolving toward higher density, lighter weight, thinner profiles, miniaturization, multifunctionality, and higher reliability. Connectors used for sleeves, interfaces, terminals, and internal assemblies must maintain stable electrical performance throughout their service life.
Copper and copper alloys are widely used as connector base materials because of their excellent electrical conductivity and forming characteristics. However, the exposed copper surface may be susceptible to corrosion and mechanical wear. Appropriate surface treatment is therefore required to improve corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical contact reliability, and solderability.
A commonly used surface treatment is gold plating over a nickel underlayer, which provides reliable electrical contact and improved resistance to corrosion and wear. For applications requiring solderability, copper-based plating systems can also be adopted. Silver plating is used less frequently because of its comparatively lower corrosion resistance.
Palladium and palladium alloy coatings have also become established alternatives to certain gold-plating applications. Their good wear resistance makes them particularly suitable for electronic connectors subjected to frequent insertion and extraction cycles.
The process sequence can be configured according to the connector material, coating specifications, plating areas, and production requirements:
Loading → Degreasing → Water Rinsing ×3 → Acid Cleaning → Water Rinsing ×3 → Aminosulfonate Nickel Plating → Water Rinsing ×3 → Selective Pulse Gold Plating → Recovery Rinsing → Water Rinsing ×3 → Selective Sn-Pb Alloy Plating → Water Rinsing ×3 → Deionized Water Rinsing → Deionized Hot-Water Rinsing → Drying → Unloading → Final Inspection
The process combines nickel plating, selective pulse gold plating, and selective Sn-Pb alloy plating to meet different functional requirements on connector contact and soldering areas. Multiple rinsing stages are incorporated between key processes to minimize solution carryover and maintain plating bath conditions.

Selective plating: Gold and Sn-Pb alloy can be applied only to designated functional areas.
Reliable electrical contact: Nickel and gold coatings help maintain stable contact performance.
Enhanced wear resistance: Suitable for connectors exposed to repeated insertion and extraction.
Improved corrosion resistance: Surface coatings provide additional protection for copper and copper-alloy substrates.
High process cleanliness: Multi-stage rinsing and DI-water rinsing help reduce chemical contamination.
Consistent coating quality: Controlled plating parameters support uniform and repeatable surface treatment.
The complete line can be configured around the continuous movement of the metal strip:
Unwinding → Surface Pretreatment → Electroplating → Rinsing → Post-Treatment → Drying → Rewinding
The actual process sequence can be customized according to the required coating and substrate condition.
| Process Stage | Typical Function |
|---|---|
| Unwinding | Provides continuous material feeding into the line |
| Pretreatment | Removes oil, oxide and surface contaminants before plating |
| Electroplating | Applies the specified metallic coating |
| Rinsing | Removes residual process chemicals between treatment stages |
| Post-Treatment | Provides additional surface treatment when required |
| Drying | Removes moisture before the material is rewound |
| Rewinding | Collects the finished strip for subsequent production |
The number and arrangement of process tanks, rinsing stages, heating or cooling units, rectifiers and auxiliary systems can be adjusted according to the customer's process requirements.

Each reel-to-reel plating line is checked according to its mechanical, electrical and process configuration before shipment.
