Barrel Electroplating Overview

Barrel electroplating is an efficient finishing method for small metal parts and components. A batch of workpieces is loaded into a rotating plating barrel, where the parts repeatedly tumble during processing. An internal conductive system provides electrical contact, allowing metal ions in the plating solution to be deposited onto the workpiece surfaces.

As the barrel rotates, the parts are continuously mixed and exposed to the plating solution. Fresh solution enters through openings in the barrel, while used solution and hydrogen generated during electroplating are discharged, helping maintain effective solution circulation.

Barrel plating is commonly used for surface protection, corrosion resistance, functional coating and decorative finishing of small components.

Typical Zinc Barrel Plating Process

Loading → Degreasing & Rust Removal → Water Rinsing → Neutralization → Water Rinsing → Spray Rinsing → Zinc Plating → Recovery Rinsing → Water Rinsing → Spray Rinsing → Water Rinsing → Brightening → Water Rinsing → Passivation (Blue-White / Color / Black) → Water Rinsing → Spray Rinsing → Hot Water Rinsing → Unloading

The process sequence can be adjusted according to the workpiece material, coating requirements and production conditions.

Automatic Gantry Barrel Plating Line

1. Automatic Process Handling

The line performs the complete plating process automatically, while loading and unloading are carried out manually. Barrels are transported to and from the loading and unloading stations by trolleys, while the gantry system handles automatic transfer between process tanks.

2. Configurable Gantry Transporters

Multiple gantry transporters can be configured according to production capacity and process cycle requirements. Each transporter supports vertical lifting and horizontal travel with selectable high- and low-speed movement for efficient and stable barrel handling.

3. Intelligent PLC-Based Operation

Operators only need to enter the corresponding barrel or product code and select the required program. The IPC retrieves the preset process recipe and communicates the relevant commands to the PLC.

The gantry transporter then automatically executes the programmed sequence, reducing manual intervention and improving process consistency.

4. Precise Positioning and Stable Movement

The transporter adopts absolute-position control for accurate movement between process stations. Each tank has a unique identification code to help prevent positioning errors and incorrect travel.

The lifting and horizontal movement system is designed for controlled acceleration, deceleration and positioning, helping achieve stable barrel transfer during continuous operation.

5. Multi-Level Safety Protection

The equipment incorporates multiple safety measures, including:

  • Anti-collision devices on the transporter to help protect personnel and surrounding equipment

  • Fall-prevention blocks and travel-limit power-off devices on both sides of the rails

  • Safety ropes connected to the emergency braking system along both sides of the plating line

  • Movement warning devices to provide visual or audible alerts during transporter operation

6. Automatic Barrel Transfer Sequence

The operator first places the trolley carrying the loaded barrel at the loading station. The barrel or product code can be entered by barcode, IC card or computer interface.

After pressing “Load Ready,” the IPC retrieves the corresponding process data and sends the instructions to the PLC. The gantry transporter automatically moves to the loading position, lifts the barrel from the trolley and transfers it through each required process tank according to the preset sequence.

After the final plating and post-treatment steps, the system checks the unloading station. Once the position is available, the transporter places the finished barrel onto the trolley. An audible notification alerts the operator to move the trolley away for unloading and select “Unload Ready” for the next production cycle.

7. Process Data Recording

During the entire plating cycle, key process information such as bath temperature, processing time, electrical current and other configured parameters can be transmitted to and stored in the IPC.

The recorded data can be reviewed, archived and printed, providing useful support for production monitoring, process control and quality traceability.

How the Automatic Barrel Zinc Plating Line Works

1. Manual Loading

The operator loads the workpieces into the plating barrel and moves the loaded barrel trolley to the loading station.

2. Product Code Selection

The operator enters the corresponding product code through the control interface.

3. Recipe Retrieval

The IPC retrieves the preset process data associated with the selected product code and sends the corresponding instructions to the PLC.

4. Automatic Transfer

The gantry transporter lifts the barrel carrier from the trolley and transfers it to the programmed process station.

5. Automatic Plating Process

The barrel is sequentially transferred through pretreatment, zinc plating, rinsing, passivation and other configured process stations.

6. Process Data Recording

Selected process data such as temperature, process time and current can be recorded through the IPC.

7. Automatic Return

After the process is completed, the barrel is returned to the unloading station and the operator is notified to unload the finished workpieces.
